How to Upgrade From Windows 10 to 11 (Free, Step by Step)

Windows 10 stopped receiving security updates in October 2025, and the machine you are reading this on may well still be running it. That is not unusual and it is not automatically a crisis, but it does mean the question of upgrading has moved from something you could sensibly put off to something with a date attached to it.

The upgrade itself is one of the least dramatic things Microsoft has ever shipped. On a machine that meets the requirements it is a Windows Update you accept, an hour of waiting, and a desktop that looks slightly different with all your files exactly where you left them. On a machine that does not meet the requirements it is a much longer conversation, and that is where most of the confusion, most of the bad advice and most of the wasted money live.

This guide covers both. It walks through how to check whether your PC qualifies, the three separate ways to run the upgrade and when each one is the right tool, what to do before you start so you are not recovering from something at midnight, what actually happens to your files, your applications and your licence, how to roll back if you hate it, and what your options genuinely are if your hardware is not on the list. It also covers the errors people hit most often and what each one is actually telling you.

The short answer on how to upgrade from Windows 10 to 11

If your PC meets the requirements, open Settings, go to Update and Security, choose Windows Update, and check for updates. If the upgrade is being offered to your machine it appears there as a download you accept. It is free, it keeps your files and applications, and it takes somewhere between forty minutes and two hours depending on the machine. That is the whole procedure for the majority of people.

If the offer has not appeared and you know your PC qualifies, the Windows 11 Installation Assistant from Microsoft’s download page does the same upgrade on demand rather than waiting to be offered. It is the normal answer to the question of why the update is not showing up yet.

If your PC does not meet the requirements, you have three honest options: keep running Windows 10 with the security risk that now carries, replace the machine, or use one of the documented workarounds to install on unsupported hardware and accept that you are outside what Microsoft supports. There is no fourth option where an unsupported machine becomes supported, and anybody selling you one is selling you something else.

Why this upgrade has a deadline attached

Windows upgrades are usually optional in the sense that nothing bad happens if you ignore them. This one is different, and the difference is worth being precise about because a lot of the advice floating around either overstates it into panic or dismisses it entirely.

What end of support actually means

Windows 10 reached the end of its support lifecycle on 14 October 2025. From that date Microsoft stopped issuing security updates, quality updates, feature updates and technical support for the consumer editions. The operating system did not stop working, no licence expired, nothing was disabled and no screen appeared telling you to stop. Your machine carried on exactly as it was.

What changed is that newly discovered vulnerabilities in Windows 10 are no longer being fixed. Every month that passes adds to the list of known problems with no patch. That is a risk that accumulates rather than one that arrives, which is precisely why it is easy to ignore. The machine works fine today and it will work fine tomorrow, and the exposure grows quietly in the background.

What actually happens if you stay

Realistically, for a while, very little. Applications keep working. Browsers continued shipping updates for Windows 10 past the operating system’s own cutoff, so the most exposed piece of software on most machines stayed current for longer than the OS did. Antivirus vendors likewise kept definitions flowing. The house has locks, they are just no longer being improved while the lockpicks are.

The risk profile depends heavily on what the machine does. A desktop that browses, banks and stores family photographs is a meaningfully different proposition to a machine that never touches a network. A machine handling customer data or payment information is a different proposition again, because for a business the question stops being about risk appetite and becomes about compliance. Plenty of frameworks require supported software, and an unsupported operating system is a finding whether or not anything has actually gone wrong.

The extended security updates route

Microsoft offered consumers a way to buy time: an extended security updates programme covering critical and important security fixes for a single additional year beyond the cutoff, which takes coverage to October 2026. Enrolment was available at no cost for people who synced their settings using Windows Backup or redeemed Microsoft Rewards points, and as a paid option for anybody who preferred not to do either. Business customers have their own multi-year version of the same programme at escalating cost.

The consumer window is short by design and it is nearly spent. If you enrolled, you bought yourself the space to plan an upgrade rather than a permanent alternative to one. The thing worth internalising is that extended updates are security patches only. No new features, no quality improvements, no help if something breaks that is not a security hole. It is life support, not treatment.

Is the upgrade from Windows 10 to 11 free

Yes, for machines with a genuine, activated Windows 10 licence that meet the hardware requirements. This is the part people most often get wrong in both directions, so it is worth stating carefully.

What free actually covers

If your Windows 10 installation is activated, the upgrade to the equivalent Windows 11 edition costs nothing and requires no new key. Windows 10 Home becomes Windows 11 Home. Windows 10 Pro becomes Windows 11 Pro. The digital licence recorded against your hardware is updated to reflect Windows 11 and activation happens automatically once you are online, usually within minutes of reaching the desktop for the first time.

You do not need to find your product key, write it down, or enter it during the process. The licence follows the hardware. When it is not free

Three cases. The first is a Windows 10 installation that was never activated, which will upgrade but will land on Windows 11 in the same unactivated state, complete with the watermark and the locked personalisation settings. The second is an edition change. Going from Windows 10 Home to Windows 11 Pro is an edition upgrade and it is a purchase, separate from the version upgrade. The third is a machine that does not qualify and needs replacing, where the cost is a computer rather than a licence. That is a larger decision and it belongs further down this page.

Check whether your PC can run Windows 11

Everything else depends on this, so it is the first thing to establish rather than something to discover halfway through an installer.

The requirements in plain terms

Windows 11 asks for a 64-bit processor with at least two cores at 1 GHz or better, from a list of models Microsoft has approved; 4 GB of memory; 64 GB of storage; a system firmware that is UEFI and Secure Boot capable; TPM version 2.0; a graphics adapter compatible with DirectX 12 and the WDDM 2.0 driver model; and a display of at least 720p measured over nine inches diagonally.

The memory, storage and display numbers stop almost nobody. Two things do the actual blocking, and they are the two most people have never heard of: the processor compatibility list and TPM 2.0. The processor list is the harsher of the two. It is not a performance floor, which is why it surprises people. Perfectly quick machines from before roughly 2017 fail it while slower newer ones pass, because the line was drawn around specific security and reliability features in the silicon rather than around speed. A fast seventh-generation chip is excluded and a modest newer one is not, and no amount of benchmarking changes that.

Using PC Health Check

Microsoft’s PC Health Check application is the quickest answer. Download it from Microsoft’s Windows 11 page, install it, open it, and use the compatibility check at the top. It reports a straightforward pass or fail and, when it fails, it names the specific requirement that was not met rather than leaving you guessing.

That naming is the useful part. A failure on Secure Boot or TPM is very often a settings problem rather than a hardware problem, and those are fixable in minutes. A failure on the processor is not fixable at all. Knowing which one you have determines everything that follows.

Checking TPM yourself

You do not need an application for this. Press the Windows key and R together, type tpm.msc and press Enter. The management console that opens reports whether a TPM is present and, in the status pane, which specification version it implements. You are looking for 2.0. If it reports 1.2, the machine is old enough that the processor will almost certainly fail too.

The common and genuinely fixable case is a console reporting that no compatible TPM was found on a machine that has one. Most business and consumer machines from the last several years include the function built into the processor itself, disabled by default in the firmware. Intel calls it Platform Trust Technology and AMD calls it fTPM, and both live in the firmware setup screens you reach by pressing a key during startup. Turning it on and rebooting takes a couple of minutes and converts a failing machine into a passing one more often than people expect.

Checking Secure Boot

Press the Windows key and R, type msinfo32 and press Enter. In the system summary, look for the BIOS mode line and the Secure Boot state line. You want BIOS mode to read UEFI and Secure Boot state to read On.

If Secure Boot is off, it is a firmware setting and you can turn it on. If BIOS mode reads Legacy, the disk is partitioned in the older style and Secure Boot cannot be enabled until that is converted. Windows includes a conversion tool that changes the partition style in place without destroying data, but it is the one step on this page where an existing backup stops being a good idea and becomes a requirement.

Checking the processor

Right-click the Start button, open System, and read the processor line. Then check that exact model against Microsoft’s published lists of supported Intel, AMD and Qualcomm processors. Match the full model number rather than the family, because the boundary runs through the middle of some generations and a close guess is not good enough.

If the processor is not on the list, that is the end of the supported path for that machine. Everything from here is either a workaround or a replacement, and both are covered below. What to do before you upgrade

An in-place upgrade is reliable and most people never need any of this. The preparation matters because the cost of skipping it is asymmetric: it saves twenty minutes when nothing goes wrong and it saves a weekend when something does.

Back up, properly

Copy anything irreplaceable somewhere that is not the machine being upgraded. An external drive, a second computer, cloud storage, any of them. The in-place upgrade does not intentionally delete anything, but a power cut during the file migration phase or a drive that was already failing quietly will end the same way regardless of intent.

If you want the stronger version, take a full disk image with any imaging tool you like. That gives you a return path that does not depend on Windows being bootable, which is the one scenario where the built-in rollback is no help at all.

Free up disk space

The stated requirement is 64 GB of storage, but the installer wants meaningful free space on top of whatever is already used, because it keeps the old installation intact during the process so it can put it back if something fails. Somewhere around 25 to 30 GB of genuinely free space is a comfortable target.

Windows Disk Cleanup, run as administrator so it offers the system files option, usually finds more than people expect between old update packages, temporary files and the previous installation folder from an earlier update. Emptying the recycle bin and moving large video files to an external drive covers the rest.

Update Windows 10 first

Install every pending Windows 10 update and reboot before starting. This sounds like busywork and it prevents a specific, common failure: an upgrade that stalls partway through because a pending servicing operation was already queued. Getting to a clean, fully updated, freshly rebooted state before you begin removes an entire category of error.

Link your licence to a Microsoft account

Open Settings, Update and Security, Activation, and check whether it reports that Windows is activated with a digital licence linked to your Microsoft account. If it is not linked, sign in and link it. It takes two minutes and costs nothing.

The value shows up later. A linked licence can be reactivated through the activation troubleshooter by signing in and selecting the device, which turns the worst version of an activation problem into a routine one. This matters more than usual around an upgrade because the operating system version changing is exactly the kind of event that occasionally makes activation re-check itself. Update drivers and firmware

Visit your manufacturer’s support page, enter the model or service tag, and install the current firmware and chipset drivers for the machine before upgrading rather than after. Manufacturers shipped firmware specifically to smooth this transition, and machines running years-old firmware are noticeably more likely to produce an installation error that goes away entirely once the firmware is current.

Graphics, storage and network drivers are the three worth having current. Everything else Windows will sort out on its own.

Deal with disk encryption

If BitLocker or a manufacturer’s equivalent is protecting the drive, find your recovery key and save it somewhere off the machine before you start. Changing the operating system version and, in some cases, touching firmware settings during preparation can both trigger a recovery prompt at the next boot. That prompt is harmless if you have the key and a genuine emergency if you do not.

The key lives in your Microsoft account under devices, or in your organisation’s directory if the machine is managed. Retrieve it, put it somewhere you can reach from a phone, and then forget about it.

Check your software

Most applications that ran on Windows 10 run on Windows 11 without alteration, because the underlying platform did not change nearly as much as the interface did. The exceptions cluster in predictable places: security software that hooks deeply into the system, virtualisation tools, hardware utilities from smaller vendors, and anything talking to specialist peripherals through custom drivers.

If your work depends on a specific application, spend five minutes on the vendor’s site confirming Windows 11 support before you upgrade rather than discovering the answer afterwards. Older printers and scanners are the most frequent casualty, and the answer there is usually a generic driver rather than a broken device.

How to upgrade through Windows Update

This is the intended route and the one to use unless you have a reason not to. It is the least likely to produce surprises because Microsoft controls the pacing and holds the offer back from configurations it knows have problems.

Step by step

Open Settings from the Start menu, choose Update and Security, then Windows Update. Select Check for updates. If your machine qualifies and the offer has reached it, a Windows 11 upgrade appears as a separate item with its own download button rather than mixing in with the ordinary monthly updates.

Select download and install. Accept the licence terms. The download runs in the background and you can carry on working normally throughout, which is the part people do not expect. When it finishes, Windows asks to restart, and you can defer that to a convenient time or schedule it for overnight.

After the restart the machine works through several phases with a percentage counter on screen, rebooting itself two or three times along the way. Do not turn it off, do not close the lid on a laptop, and keep it on mains power. When it finishes you get the standard out-of-box setup questions about privacy settings and your account, and then a Windows 11 desktop with your files, applications and settings intact.

How long it takes

Between forty minutes and two hours for most machines, with the storage type being the single biggest factor. A machine with a solid state drive finishes near the bottom of that range; a mechanical hard drive can take considerably longer and there is nothing wrong when it does.

Long pauses at particular percentages are normal and are not a sign of failure. The genuine failure mode is different: the installer gives up, rolls itself back, and returns you to a working Windows 10 desktop with an error code. It does not hang forever. Give it several hours before concluding anything.

What you see on the first boot

A centred taskbar, a redesigned Start menu, rounded window corners and a different settings layout. Your desktop icons, documents, browser profiles, installed applications and most of your preferences carry across untouched. Some things reset to defaults, most notably the default browser association and a handful of file type associations, and pinned taskbar items rearrange themselves.

Give it half an hour before deciding how you feel about it. Windows 11 does a fair amount of first-run indexing and update checking in the background, and a machine that feels sluggish in the first twenty minutes is usually just busy.

How to upgrade with the Installation Assistant

If your PC passes the compatibility check but Windows Update is not offering the upgrade, the Installation Assistant is the answer. Microsoft staggers the rollout and holds machines back for reasons that are not always visible, and the Assistant simply skips the queue.

Download it from Microsoft’s Windows 11 software download page, run it as administrator, and it re-runs the compatibility check itself before doing anything. If the machine passes, it accepts the licence terms, downloads the installation files and runs exactly the same in-place upgrade Windows Update would have run. Same result, same file retention, same activation behaviour, initiated on your schedule rather than Microsoft’s.

Two things worth knowing. The Assistant will refuse outright on a machine that fails the compatibility check, so it is not a workaround for unsupported hardware. And it upgrades the machine it is running on only, which makes it the wrong tool if you are doing several machines and the right tool if you are doing one.

How to upgrade with the media creation tool or an ISO

The third route is a downloaded installation image, either written to a USB drive with Microsoft’s media creation tool or mounted directly as an ISO file. This is the flexible option and it is the one to use for multiple machines, for a machine with an unreliable internet connection, or when you want the option of a clean install rather than an upgrade.

Running an in-place upgrade from the image

With the ISO downloaded, right-click it in File Explorer and choose Mount. It appears as a drive. Open it and run setup.exe from within your existing Windows 10 session rather than booting from it. Choose to keep personal files and apps when the option appears, and from there it behaves identically to the Windows Update route.

Running setup from inside Windows is the critical detail. Booting from the media instead gives you the clean installation path, which does not offer to keep anything, and people who wanted an upgrade have wiped machines by taking the wrong one of those two turnings.

Creating the USB drive

The media creation tool writes a bootable installer to a USB drive of 8 GB or larger, erasing whatever was on it. This is the right approach for upgrading several machines, since the download happens once rather than on every machine. When a clean install is the better idea

A clean installation wipes the drive and starts fresh. It produces a demonstrably faster and tidier result than an upgrade on a machine that has been accumulating software for six or seven years, and it costs you an afternoon of reinstalling applications and signing back into things.

The activation side is not a problem. A machine with a digital licence recorded against its hardware reactivates automatically after a clean install of the same edition, with no key entered. Skip the product key prompt during setup, connect to the internet, and it sorts itself out within a few minutes of reaching the desktop.

Clean install if the machine has been slow for reasons you have never diagnosed, if it has been through several previous upgrades, or if you genuinely enjoy the exercise. Upgrade in place if it is working well and you want to keep it that way with the least disruption.

For one qualifying machine, use Windows Update and reach for the Installation Assistant only if the offer never arrives. For anything involving more than one machine, or any interest in a clean start, download the image once and work from that.

Upgrading when your PC is not supported

This is the section that matters to the people it matters to, and it deserves an honest answer rather than either a lecture or a link to a script.

What Microsoft’s position actually is

Microsoft documents a supported method of installing Windows 11 on hardware that does not meet the processor or TPM requirements, and simultaneously states that machines installed this way are not supported, may not receive updates, and that any resulting damage is not covered by warranty. Both halves of that are real. It is not a secret trick and it is not endorsed either.

The mechanism is a registry value that tells setup to skip the processor and TPM version checks during an in-place upgrade from Windows 10. It still requires a TPM of some kind, version 1.2 or better, which is why it works on machines from roughly 2016 onward and does not work on anything genuinely ancient. Other approaches circulating online remove more checks than that, and the further you get from the documented method the more you are relying on somebody else’s script doing what it says.

What it actually costs you

The honest accounting has four items. Updates are the first and the most misunderstood: unsupported machines have in practice continued receiving monthly security updates, but Microsoft explicitly reserves the right to stop, and a machine that quietly stops receiving patches is worse than one that visibly does. Feature updates are the second, and those are where unsupported machines are most likely to be blocked, leaving the machine on an increasingly old build.

Stability is the third, and it is less dramatic than warnings suggest. Most unsupported installations run perfectly well, because the requirements are about security features rather than the ability to execute the code. The fourth is support, and here the position is unambiguous: nobody has to help you, including your manufacturer.

Set against that is the alternative, which for a working machine that fails only the processor check is either running an operating system that no longer gets patched at all or buying a computer you did not otherwise need. Neither of those is obviously better, which is exactly why this decision is genuinely contested rather than simply wrong.

The recommendation, stated plainly

For a machine holding anything that matters, on a network with other machines, or belonging to a business, do not do this. Buy the hardware or keep the machine off the network. The compliance and liability exposure alone settles it for a business, and no saving on a desktop justifies it.

For a secondary home machine, a media box, a workshop computer or something you would shrug about losing, the calculation is different and reasonable people land on the workaround. Go in knowing you may be reinstalling it properly in two years, and do not put your only copy of anything on it.

For anything in between, buy the hardware. Not because the workaround will definitely fail, but because a machine you are unsure about is exactly the kind you will not want to be troubleshooting when it breaks.

What happens to your files, apps and licence

The most common question before an upgrade, and the answer is reassuring in almost every respect.

Files and applications

An in-place upgrade keeps your documents, pictures, downloads, desktop contents, browser profiles with their bookmarks and saved passwords, and your installed applications with their settings. Nothing needs reinstalling and nothing needs signing back into for the most part. The upgrade migrates the user profile rather than recreating it.

What does change is a scattering of defaults. The default browser reverts and needs setting again. Some file type associations reset. Pinned taskbar items rearrange because the taskbar itself is different. A handful of applications that install their own shell extensions need a repair or reinstall to hook back in properly, and they generally tell you.

Your Windows licence

The digital licence recorded against your hardware carries across automatically and updates itself to reflect Windows 11. No key, no reactivation step, no action from you. Home stays Home and Pro stays Pro.

The licence channel is preserved too, so a machine running an OEM licence that arrived preinstalled stays OEM and a retail licence stays retail. If you plan to change hardware around the same time as upgrading, do them separately and a few days apart. Office and other licensed software

Microsoft 365 and perpetual Office installations survive the upgrade and stay activated. You are not consuming an installation slot and you do not need to reinstall. The same is true of most licensed software, because the upgrade preserves the machine identity that licensing systems key against.

The exception is software licensed to a hardware fingerprint that includes the operating system version, which is rare but not unknown in specialist and professional applications. If you run something expensive and niche, check the vendor’s position before upgrading rather than after.

The first hour on Windows 11

A short list of things worth doing immediately, mostly to make the machine behave the way you are used to.

Settings worth changing straight away

Set your default browser, because it will have reverted. Open Settings, Apps, Default apps, find your browser and set it as default, which on Windows 11 means confirming several file types rather than one.

Check Windows Update and install whatever is pending, because the upgrade image is rarely the newest build and there will be catching up to do.

Look at Settings, Privacy and security, and go through the diagnostic data and advertising identifier options, since the out-of-box questions during setup do not cover everything.

The taskbar and Start menu

The taskbar is centred by default. If that bothers you, right-click it, open taskbar settings, expand the taskbar behaviours section and set the alignment to left. It takes ten seconds and removes the single most common complaint.

The Start menu is a different design with pinned applications above and recommendations below. You can turn off most of the recommendation categories in Settings under Personalisation, and you can unpin everything you do not use and pin what you do. Ten minutes of arranging it produces something you stop noticing.

Check your peripherals

Print a test page, plug in whatever you normally plug in, and check that the webcam and microphone work. Devices that need attention after an upgrade almost always need it in the first hour, and finding out now is better than finding out during a meeting.

Printers are the usual candidate, and the fix is usually removing the device and adding it again so Windows installs a current driver rather than migrating an old one.

How to go back to Windows 10

The upgrade is reversible, briefly and conditionally, and the conditions are worth understanding before you rely on them.

The ten day window

For ten days after an in-place upgrade, Windows keeps the previous installation in a folder on the system drive and offers a built-in path back. Open Settings, System, Recovery, and look for the option to go back to the previous version of Windows. It asks why, offers to check for updates instead, and then does it.

The rollback keeps files you created after the upgrade in most cases, but applications installed since the upgrade will be gone and settings changes will not carry back. It is a reversal, not a merge. Take a moment to copy anything new somewhere safe before triggering it.

Once the window closes

After ten days Windows deletes the previous installation folder to reclaim the space, and the built-in option disappears. Disk cleanup can remove that folder sooner if you tell it to, which people do accidentally while freeing up space and then find themselves without a return path.

After that, going back means a clean installation of Windows 10 from installation media, wiping the drive and restoring from your backup. It is entirely possible and it is a completely different afternoon. Given that Windows 10 no longer receives security updates, it is also a decision worth thinking about twice rather than treating as a simple undo.

The practical implication is to do your evaluating in the first week. If something important does not work on Windows 11, you want to know that on day three and not day thirty.

Upgrade problems and what they actually mean

The errors people hit cluster into a handful of categories, and each one is telling you something fairly specific.

This PC does not currently meet the minimum system requirements

The compatibility check failed. Run PC Health Check to find out which requirement, because the message on its own does not say. If it is TPM or Secure Boot, it is very likely a firmware setting and you can fix it in minutes. If it is the processor, the machine is genuinely not on the list and the supported path ends there.

Windows Update says you are up to date but offers nothing

The offer is staggered and your machine has not reached the front of the queue, or Microsoft has placed a compatibility hold on a driver or application present on your system. Neither is a fault and neither needs fixing.

If the machine passes the compatibility check, the Installation Assistant bypasses the queue and gets you there on your own schedule. If you would rather wait, the offer arrives eventually. If a compatibility hold is the reason, updating the driver or removing the application concerned usually clears it, though you will rarely be told which one it is.

Installation errors with a code

The installer rolls back cleanly and returns you to a working Windows 10 desktop with a code that identifies the phase it failed in. The overwhelmingly common causes are insufficient free space, an incompatible driver, third-party security software interfering, or a peripheral confusing the hardware detection.

The generic fix that resolves most of them: free up more space than you think you need, disconnect every USB device except the keyboard and mouse, temporarily disable third-party antivirus, update the graphics and storage drivers, and try again. That sequence clears the majority of installation failures without anybody ever discovering which item was responsible. Not enough space

Run Disk Cleanup as administrator and use the clean up system files option, which is where the previous installation folders and old update packages live. Move large media files to an external drive. If the drive is genuinely small, a temporary external drive can hold the installer’s working files during the upgrade, and the installer will offer that option when it detects the problem.

Activation problems after upgrading

Uncommon but not rare, and usually temporary. Windows sometimes needs several hours and a reboot or two to sort itself out after a version change, so the first move is to wait and reboot rather than to start entering keys.

If it persists, open Settings, System, Activation, and run the activation troubleshooter. On a machine with a licence linked to a Microsoft account it will typically resolve this by itself. Keep the licence paperwork straight throughout. Entitlement during an audit is a documentation question rather than a technical one, and an upgrade is exactly the point at which records get muddled. The honest trade-offs

Windows 11 is not dramatically better than Windows 10 for most day-to-day work, and pretending otherwise does nobody any favours. The window management improvements are genuinely useful, the security baseline is meaningfully higher, and the interface is a matter of taste that most people stop noticing within a week. If Windows 10 was doing everything you needed, Windows 11 will do the same things with different corners on the windows.

That means the case for upgrading rests almost entirely on support rather than on features. That is a weaker motivation than a compelling new capability, and it is also a completely sufficient one. An operating system that stops receiving security fixes gets worse every month without anything visibly changing, which is the most easily ignored kind of problem there is.

The hardware requirements are the genuinely contentious part and the criticism is fair. Perfectly capable machines are excluded by a processor list rather than by any inability to run the software, and the environmental and financial cost of that decision lands on people who did nothing wrong. The rollback window is shorter than it feels. Ten days sounds generous and disappears quickly when you only use the machine at weekends. If you are upgrading something you are unsure about, plan to test it properly in the first few days rather than intending to get around to it.

Mistakes people keep making

Upgrading without a backup because the upgrade keeps your files. It usually does. The one time it does not is the reason backups exist.

Concluding a machine is unsupported because PC Health Check failed on TPM. That is a firmware setting on most machines built in the last several years, and turning it on takes two minutes.

Buying a Windows 11 licence to upgrade an activated Windows 10 machine. The upgrade is free and the existing licence carries across. This is the most expensive mistake on the list and it is entirely avoidable.

Booting from the installation media when an in-place upgrade was wanted. Booting gives you the clean install path with no option to keep anything. Run setup.exe from inside Windows instead.

Deleting the previous installation folder during a disk cleanup in the first ten days. That folder is the rollback, and removing it removes the return path.

Upgrading and changing hardware in the same session. Two variables, one problem, twice the diagnosis.

If it fails on the processor and the machine holds anything you care about, plan a replacement. Buy the hardware on your timetable rather than in an emergency, and move the data across properly.

If you are running a business, audit the estate, pilot on one machine per model, and treat the machines that cannot be upgraded as a budget line with a date on it rather than a problem to solve later.
